Hit and Run Insurance

Imagine walking to your car after a lovely evening with your family at a restaurant. Upon reaching your vehicle, you see that your vehicle has big scratches in it. Someone hit your car!

You run to the windshield, because, of course that person would have left a note… but no note is there! How frustrating this is, and it happens far too often.

The good news is, a hit and run is covered under your insurance policy if you carry collision on your vehicle. If it is an unidentified driver, you will have to pay your deductible but it will not count as an at fault claim. Collision is an optional coverage. If you do not have this coverage, you will have to pay to fix your car out of your own pocket.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime. You must report it to the police, with any information you have, including time, date and location. If you do not report it to the police, the claim is counted as an at fault accident.

If you can find any witnesses, that may help the police to identify who is responsible. Sometimes, in parking lots, there may be security cameras.

Call your broker as soon as possible to report the loss. You will need to provide the police report number and details to start the claim.

As always, if you have questions call your broker today. We can to make sure you have collision coverage on your policy in case you are the victim of a hit and run. We hope this never happens to you of course!
